Networking in academia: Social Media

Course instructor:

Dr. Mirjam Gleßmer; Fascinocean

This course will be offered in collaboration with the Continuing Professional Development Center at Kiel University.

Target Audience:

This online workshop is open to all academic staff (from research and teaching) from SEA-EU member universities.

Online, a link will be sent prior to the course

Detailed Description:

Social media like Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Research Gate and many more are great tools to – pretty much in real time – learn about new developments in the field, showcase own work or ideas, and build a network.

Over the first four meetings we’ll develop individual strategies to choose the platform that works best for your goals, audience and message, and we’ll take first steps into actively using that platform. While all platforms are supported, examples are mainly drawn from Twitter and Instagram.

The fifth meeting is a networking meeting with other CAU employees that are active on social media and who are invited to join and contribute on that day.

Learning targets:

  • understand the potential of social media for academic networking
  • develop their communication goal, audience, and message
  • have created a profile on the platform of their choice and have done first steps towards actively using
