Today, February 11, 2022 is celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It was proclaimed in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly in order to achieve full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls, in addition to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.This day is a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology communities and that their participation must be strengthened. The celebration of this day is led by UNESCO and UN Women, in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners that promote access and participation of women and girls in science.
Science and gender equality are vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over the past decades, the international community has made a great effort to inspire and promote the participation of women and girls in science. However, women continue to face barriers in science.
In order to achieve full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls, and furthermore to achieve gender equality and empowerment of women and girls.
