As part of the Emotional Health Practicum series, Dr. Igor Papić, a specialist in school medicine and child mental health, held a lecture at the University Gallery in Split. His central message: “The true nature of our being is peace and happiness.”Dr. Papić encouraged a shift in how we view emotional struggles—not as isolated problems but as deeply tied to our environment, upbringing, and relationships. He emphasized presence and empathy, especially in how adults relate to children: “No reward can replace a parent who is truly present—not just physically, but emotionally.” He underlined the role of emotional literacy, not as textbook knowledge but something children learn by observing adults.
“Our emotional state is the strongest message we send to children.” Papić also noted the widespread denial of emotional issues, stressing that most people carry unprocessed childhood wounds. True healing, he said, begins with acknowledgment and openness to change—however gradual.
He cited Denmark’s example, where empathy is taught in schools, arguing that emotional intelligence is as essential as academic knowledge. Closing the event, he told students:
“You don’t need to be perfect to help. The desire to help is already healing.”
The evening was expertly moderated by Helena Trze Jakelić, head of the University Gallery.
