Center for Historical Games and Heritage (C-HIGHER) based at the Faculty of History UG is an interdepartmental R&I team working at the intersection of games, history and heritage. We work in four areas: research, education, gamedev and nonprofits. We invite applications for secondments with a focus on Historical Game Studies and/or Historical Game Design R&D.

As an interdepartmental research and innovation team led by the Faculty of History, C-HIGHER explores the intersection of history, heritage, and games. We aim to inspire educational innovation, promote cultural understanding, and advance game development through research, teaching, partnerships, and creative projects. We run a BA programme in Historical Game Design, carry out research in Historical Game Studies, organise related conferences, and routinely collaborate with museums, NGOs and game industry partners.

We welcome early-career scholars (doctoral or postdoctoral researcher) with a background in game studies carried out under the humanities and/or social sciences. Our candidate should be a competent researcher and writer with a collaborative mindset and good understanding of games (digital or analog, or both). As we work with historical and heritage content, which is often controversial and sometimes deeply traumatising, our secondees should be willing to approach it critically and with an open mind.

Secondment must take place between November 2025 and June 2026

Tasks and duties entrusted to the student:

Secondees may come to support C-HIGHER’s ongoing research and R&D work, or bring their own HGS projects to consult and co-develop with our staff and partners. Secondments may include playtesting, consulting and co-design of student-led game projects in our Historical Game Design BA programme. We also encourage participation in co-development of joint grant proposals related to research on history- and heritage-themed games. The leading disciplines at the Faculty of History are History, Archaeology, Art History and Culture Studies.

Skills to be acquired or developed:

Our secondees will receive training in Historical Game Studies and Heritage Studies, combined with skills in academic writing, researching, editing and presentation. If relevant, they may participate in collaborative planning and writing of grant proposals. They may get hands-on practice in historical game consultancy, playtesting and prototyping, coupled with teamwork and communication by participating in ongoing game projects. Becoming part of C-HIGHER interdisciplinary and international activities, they will expand their academic and industry networks and opportunities for partnership-building.
