As part of the University of Split Day celebrations, a solo exhibition by renowned Croatian contemporary artist Damir Sokić opened on Wednesday, June 11 at the University Gallery.
Titled “Letters”, the exhibition features 19 mixed-media works combining sculpture, painting, and fictional personal letters.
Each piece is accompanied by a letter addressed to “Dear Roka,” ending with the recurring line: “Write to me.” These poetic texts reflect themes of memory, intimacy, and artistic contemplation.
Art historian Božo Majstorović, who introduced the show, described it as “a deeply personal, multi-sensory experience—one that must be read as much as viewed.”
A highlight of the exhibition is a special artist’s book printed in both Latin script and Braille, inviting tactile interaction and broadening accessibility.
Rector Prof. Dr. Dragan Ljutić officially opened the exhibition, emphasizing Sokić’s lasting impact on Croatian contemporary art. The exhibition remains open until July 12, weekdays from 9–12 and 17–20 h.
Damir Sokić (b. 1952) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and later lived and worked in New York. He is a recipient of the Vladimir Nazor Award and a long-time professor and researcher in the arts.
