Neli Ružić: Color as an Affective and Social Gesture

Neli Ružić (Split, 1966) is a multimedia artist whose work explores the perception of time, historical narratives, and the relationships between personal and collective memory. Her practice often engages with issues of identity, migration, and social transformation, using various media including installations, spatial interventions, and documentary-based projects.

In her project “All at Once”, created for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, Ružić examines color as a medium of emotional, perceptual, and social experience. Through an intervention in the building’s architecture, where primary colors filter natural light, she transforms the space into a kind of chromatic laboratory — a place where knowledge, emotion, and reflection intersect. Color here moves beyond mere aesthetic function to become an active participant in shaping meaning, linking the educational environment with the idea of emancipation.

Her work draws on historical explorations of color as both an affective and physiological phenomenon while situating it within contemporary social contexts, turning the space of learning into one of sensory and collective dialogue.

The project is part of REPER, a collaborative program between the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split and the Croatian Association of Fine Artists, designed to encourage critical reflection on the role of contemporary art within society.
