The inaugural edition of the ‘BEING SEA-EU’ Conference was held at the Valetta Campus of the University of Malta from 10 to 12 June 2024, marking a significant milestone in the SEA-EU Alliance’s efforts to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange.
The conference brought together 253 in-person participants and 67 virtual attendees, featuring four thematic streams, 43 sessions, 150 presentations, 34 posters, and representatives from nine SEA-EU universities and over ten associated partners.
The opening session was graced by prominent figures including Prof. Alfred J. Vella, Rector of the University of Malta and of the SEA-EU Alliance; Prof. Alan Deidun, Rector’s Delegate for SEA-EU at the University of Malta; and Commissioner Emeritus Karmenu Vella, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Malta. An online addresses by Prof. Fidel Echevarría, the General Coordinator of the SEA-EU Alliance, and by Dr. Ioana De Wandeler, EU Commission representative, added to the event’s prestige.
Following the inauguration, the conference delved into parallel sessions categorized under (1) STEM, (2) Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, (3) Migration, Human Rights and Interdisciplinary, and (4) Young Scientists Session. Each session featured presentations by multiple researchers, showcasing cutting-edge research and fostering vibrant discussions. Attendees also explored poster displays and pre-recorded presentations in designated areas, enriching the conference experience.
Parallel to the primary conference activities, two Staff Weeks were conducted, focusing on the Observatories of the Sustainable Blue Economy and Migration and Human Rights. These sessions provided participants with additional avenues for learning and collaboration.
As the conference concluded, anticipation for future editions grew. The University of Cádiz will host the next edition in 2025, followed by the University of Gdansk in 2026, continuing the tradition of academic excellence and international collaboration established at this first conference.
The ‘BEING SEA-EU’ Conference not only showcased the strengths of the SEA-EU Alliance but also provided a dynamic platform for researchers to network, share insights, and build lasting partnerships.
