BIP Coastal Protection and Sustainability at Parthenope University

The Blended Intensive Programme ‘Coastal Protection and Sustainability’, organised by Parthenope University in collaboration with the University of Split and the University of Gdańsk, came to an end last week. The intensive course addressed the issue of coastal protection, increasing urbanisation and anthropogenic transformations of the territory through a multidisciplinary approach. International students explored innovative strategies to mitigate natural hazards such as landslides, floods and coastal erosion, with a particular focus on sustainable environmental interventions in coastal areas located near rocky cliffs and river mouths.

Theoretical learning was combined with practical learning through group work and field trips. The field visit to the Fondi plain in Lazio region, led by Prof. Guido Benassai, allowed for the analysis of coastal erosion and coastline evolution phenomena influenced not only by natural conditions but also by anthropogenic activity, specifically the construction of a system of transverse groynes.
The second field visit, along the coast of the island of Capri, was led by Prof. Stefano Aversa, who illustrated the stability problems of rocky cliffs and the resulting interventions to mitigate the risk of landslides.

The mentioned Parthenope Professors were assisted by colleagues Prof. Renata Della Morte and Dr Giada Varra. Prof. Morena Galešić Divić and Veljko Srzić from the University of Split, and Prof. Mirosława Malinowska from the University of Gdansk also contributed to the teaching programme and training activities, supported by Parthenope University SEA-EU Office.
