From April 8 to 10, 2025, the University of Split hosted the “Green Workshop” as part of the SEA-EU alliance’s efforts to strengthen sustainability across European universities. Over three days, participants shared experiences, co-created strategies, and laid the groundwork for lasting green transformation.
Day 1 – Strengthening Sustainability Networks
The first day focused on building stronger connections between sustainability teams across SEA-EU universities. After the opening session, the event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Technology, Prof. Dr. Sc. Matko Erceg. Welcome speeches set the tone for a collaborative and forward-looking workshop. Guests from the universities of Gdańsk, Malta, Italy, Split, Brest, and Cádiz delivered presentations showcasing their internal sustainability structures and initiatives. These insightful contributions provided a deeper understanding of the diverse approaches being implemented across institutions, highlighting both common goals and unique strategies. The day concluded with a joint lunch at the student canteen, offering guests a chance to experience how student dining operates at the University of Split—both in terms of organization and sustainability.
Day 2 – Shaping the Green Charter
The second day was dedicated to defining a shared Green Charter—a framework to guide sustainability efforts within SEA-EU. After a brief recap of the first day, the morning featured a panel discussion on how such a charter can support universities in aligning their strategies with environmental goals. Participants reflected on challenges and successes, and a workshop session allowed them to collaboratively draft charter proposals. Each point of the draft charter was discussed and voted on, resulting in a refined and jointly accepted version. In the afternoon, the group focused on action planning: determining what steps are realistic for each university and how to integrate the charter officially. The day closed with a relaxing guided tour through Split’s historic city center.
Day 3 – From Local Ideas to Green Implementation
On the final day, the spotlight shifted to local action. Universities shared successful sustainability initiatives in areas such as research, teaching, and administration. Presentations highlighted both innovative solutions and the lessons learned along the way, providing inspiration and practical examples. A hands-on collaboration workshop followed, during which participants worked in thematic groups to brainstorm potential joint projects and funding strategies. The final session provided time for discussion, defining the next steps, and reaffirming the group’s commitment to long-term cooperation. The event ended with a summary of outcomes and informal networking, leaving participants energized and connected.
The End
The Green Workshop marked an important step in SEA-EU’s green journey. By combining knowledge, experience, and shared vision, the participating universities set a strong foundation for a more sustainable and collaborative future.
