On Thursday, 18 July 2024, the University of Malta hosted the summer edition of the SEA-EU Staff Day organised by the UM SEA-EU Office. This event honoured the hard work and dedication of individuals committed to advancing the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) goals. It also served as an opportunity to update UM staff on the activity and achievements of the Alliance.
The first part of the event, held in the Council Room, began with a welcome address by Prof. Alan Deidun, UM Rector’s Delegate for the SEA-EU Alliance. The Rector delivered an enthusiastic speech drawing attention to the strength of cooperation between universities, which will be the future of education.
Further, Prof. Alfred J Vella acknowledged the support of SEA-EU Nominees – the administrative and academic staff working on the tasks within the SEA-EU Alliance – and the creators of SEA-EU Joint Degrees Programmes. To honour their contributions, Prof. Alfred J Vella presented certificates of appreciation.
Attendees then moved to SEA-EU Virtual Learning Halls in the IT Services Building, for the second part of the event focused on the presentation of the SEA-EU updates. The special guest of this part of the event was Prof. Fidel Echevarría, General Coordinator of the SEA-EU Alliance He provided an overview of the Alliance’s goals and achievements. He highlighted, among other things, the 4 flagship initiatives, which guide the European Strategy for Universities: the development of European Universities Initiatives within the Erasmus+ framework, the establishment of the legal status of the European Universities Alliances, the creation of European Joint Degrees and further growth of the European Student Card initiative.
Then, the event highlighted the Alliance’s achievements over the past four months in a presentation by Prof. Deidun, followed by a Q&A session. The aim of this segment was to update attendees on the progress and developments of SEA-EU activities.
The SEA-EU Staff Day celebrated the significant contributions of UM’s SEA-EU community and reinforced the importance of continued collaboration.
