As part of the SEA-EU WP4 – Task 4.4 (SEA-EU Goes Greener), the University of Algarve (UAlg) reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability by hosting the second edition of its Second Life initiative on March 17, 2025, at the Penha Campus. Organized in collaboration with the Students’ Union, the event aimed to promote the reuse and repurposing of items within the academic community.
With a strong focus on raising awareness around sustainable practices, the initiative invited students, faculty, and staff to donate unused clothes, books, shoes, and other items — giving them a new lease on life. A university-wide email campaign encouraged participation, and seven collection boxes were strategically placed across UAlg’s campuses for a full week leading up to the event.
The response was remarkable. Donations poured in, reflecting the community’s enthusiastic support for environmental responsibility. A dedicated team of volunteers sorted and prepared the items for display, ensuring a well-organized and welcoming event.
The Second Life initiative started at 11:00 AM and ran until 4:30 PM, drawing in a vibrant crowd of students, faculty members, and staff. Attendees browsed and selected items, embracing the idea of reuse and reducing waste.
By the end of the day, nearly all donated items had found new owners — a testament to the success of the initiative and the growing sustainability culture at UAlg. This event marks another meaningful step in the university’s journey toward a greener future.
