SEA-EU Virtual Modules 

The SEA-EU Virtual Modules promote virtual student mobility, international learning, and collaboration in interdisciplinary topics from the fields of:

  • Maritime and Marine Sciences in collaboration with the interdisciplinary Master School of Marine Sciences (iMSMS) at Kiel University
  • Economics


Virtual Modules bring together master students and teaching scientists at our SEA-EU partner universities to provide an easily accessible opportunity to connect and collaborate with others across Europe.

Maritime and Environmental Law: theory and practice

The main objective of this 1 day module is to learn about the pollution of ships and the socio-legal approach to marine plastic pollution (lecture part in the morning) as well as to practise the participatory principle in Environmental Law at European level in an in-depth exercise part (in the afternoon).

Course type: Lectures (8:30 – 12:30 CET) and exercise (14:00 – 17:00 CET). The two parts can be followed independent of each other.

Tourism and Sustainability

The main objectives of the module are to (1) reflect upon the forms of interaction between tourism and the environment, (2) analyse methods to assess the economic value of natural resources on which tourism is based and (3) discuss the social dimension of tourism.

The module covers the following topics:

  2. Interaction between Tourism and the Environment
  3. Economic Valuation of Touristic Natural Resources
  4. A Sustainable Perspective on Tourist Destinations
  5. The Social Dimension of Tourism
  6. Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals

Classes take place between 6th October to 9th December, with live online/hybrid sessions on Tuesdays, 10:30-12:00 and 12:30 – 14:00 CEST/CET.

Generally, the module comprises of lecture and independent study work as well as few tutorials.

Green Biotechnology and intelligent mariculture

The module provides an understanding of the use of raw materials such as water, energy and land/coastal waters in industry and transport. It lays the foundation for further in-depth studies of ways in which biotechnology can support recycling, reuse of existing materials and in the generation of new supplies of raw materials.

A focus lies on the expected changes in society and technology, ranging from the shift in the supply of resources, the growing need for efficiency and sustainability of the production systems, changing consumer perception and behaviour and changing mariculture systems and practices.

Metal Contaminants – Metals in the Ocean

This course provides a comprehensive insight to the topic of marine metal contaminants, encompassing their chemistry, environmental toxicology, risk assessments, management, and analytical skills.

Please note: Those applying before 17./18.9 may already be accepted before the deadline. All others will be notified after 5 October. There is no SEA-EU coordination available between 19.9-4.10.

This course provides a comprehensive insight to the topic of marine metal contaminants, encompassing their chemistry, environmental toxicology, risk assessments, management, and analytical skills.

By the end of the course, students will have developed an interdisciplinary understanding and practical expertise on metals in the ocean and the skills to assess and evaluate potential impacts of metal contaminants in marine environments.

Application Deadline: 4th October 2026
(Applicants who apply early may be accepted by the lecturer and SEA-EU on 17th and 18th Sept; all others will be notified from 5th Oct onwards. Please note, that there will be no SEA-EU coordination available between 19th Sept and 4th Oct).

Mode:
The blended course format will consist of on-site/hybrid live lectures with on-site/hybrid Q&A sessions and applied learning exercises, as well as self-study (recorded) online lectures.

Schedule: In-person/hybrid live session on Tuesdays, 15:30 – 17:30 CET, and video recorded lectures for self-study provided on Fridays; from 13th Oct to 18th Dec 2026.
