A look back at the SEA-EU Coastal MGMT BIP

A BIP to explore coastal management

Coasts are hotspots for human use, ecosystem diversity and the effects of climate change. Future generations will face considerable challenges in coastal management, whether it be river mouths, foreshores, beaches or cliffs in various tidal and climatic environments, with varying degrees of urbanisation and coastal management.

This requires interdisciplinary practical experience and training in the field of coastal dynamics.

From 23 to 27 June 2025, the PIM-BIP Coastal MGMT brought together 15 international and interdisciplinary students from the universities of Faro, Cadiz, Kiel, Split and Brest in Finistère to discuss the topic of coastal management.

The objective of the BIP

The objective was to develop skills to describe and compare the geophysical and socio-economic conditions of different coastlines in Europe, developing the ability to predict their possible future evolution.

Divided into three groups, the students spent the week in the field visiting six coastal sites, allowing each group to spend two days on one system. On site, the students classified and described the coasts.

The results obtained

The results are reports on the physical and environmental status, proposals for an appropriate study and monitoring programme, and the future prospects for these systems.

At the end of this programme, the students acquired knowledge about coastal processes, methodological skills to analyse the state of the coast and its past and future evolution, and practical experience of field techniques.

SEA-EU BIPS

SEA-EU universities regularly organise intensive courses on a variety of topics open to students from the alliance. Combining an online component with a mobility component, often lasting a few days or a week, BIPS offer a different approach to international mobility compared to the traditional study mobility offered under Erasmus+.

These short periods of mobility also provide a unique academic, intercultural and linguistic experience.

Would you like to participate in a BIP? Consult the list of BIPs open for applications and contact the Mobility Unit of the International Affairs Department for more information. Feel free to explain your motivations and provide information about your study programme.
