Concert “Tribute to the Accordion” marks the opening of the 2025/26 Academic Year at UAlg

The University of Algarve marked the opening of the 2025/26 Academic Year with a concert by the Algarve Orchestra, held on 20 September in the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Grand Auditorium, Gambelas Campus (Faro). Entitled “Tribute to the Accordion”, the concert was free of charge and filled the venue to its capacity.

The Algarve Orchestra welcomed one of the most acclaimed national soloists and celebrated the return of a much-missed maestro in a programme that bridged innovation and tradition. João Barradas – one of today’s most versatile and internationally sought-after musicians – performed Mozart’s Concerto No. 23, while Symphony No. 39 closed the evening with the classical brilliance and intensity that launched this new artistic cycle. The concert also featured the world premiere of O Diamante de Milene, by João Nascimento, inspired by the literary work of Lídia Jorge, an award-winning Portuguese writer.
