Is Polish language just a rustle to you? Join us, and we will teach you to “hiss” and “rustle” like a professional! Poland lies in the very center of Europe, yet at the very end of the European Union. This geographical riddle is just a warm-up for other surprises—especially those on your plate. In this course, you will gain solid language basics, get to know our country, and dare to pronounce the world’s most difficult words. We will prepare you for a real visit to Poland!

What will you learn?

– professional rustling: You will master the pronunciation of the sounds “sz,” “cz,” and “ś” so that you don’t break your tongue—from a simple „cześć” to the legendary „beetle in the reeds” („chrząszcz w trzcinie”).

– linguistic puzzles: You will find out what connects a castle and a jacket, a price and a road, by discovering the multiple meanings of Polish words.

– culinary detective: You will uncover the “strange” compositions of Polish dishes and find out what wonderful things you can conjure up from just cabbage and mushrooms.

– virtual hiking: We will take you on a virtual hiking trip across the beautiful lakes and meadows of Pomerania—because Pomerania is not just the sea.

– shopping survival: You will understand the system of Polish shops in both the city and the country, and learn how to buy coffee and bread like a local.

Additional details:

  • Technical Requirements: Laptop/PC with a stable Internet connection, a camera and a microphone.
  • Lessons will be held via Microsoft Teams.

Italian Culture: Culinary Language and Non-verbal Communication

The Language Centre (CLA) of Parthenope University offers a short-term course in Italian Culinary and Body Language. This intensive course is designed for students aiming to deepen their understanding of two distinctive aspects of Italian culture: its culinary heritage and its highly expressive non-verbal communication. Through cultural analysis, textual exploration, and interactive activities, the course provides participants with the tools to interpret these dimensions within Italy and in their global diffusion. After a general introduction to the cultural significance of food in Italy, the course offers a concise historical overview of Italian cuisine, its regional variations, and the factors that shaped it across centuries. Students will then explore how Italian food culture and terminology have travelled abroad. A practical interactive component will invite participants to reflect on how Italianness in food influences their own language and (inter)cultural experience, discussing examples of culinary loanwords and culturally embedded concepts. A separate module will explore Italian body language and gesture, examining their pragmatic functions, their role in social interaction, and their perception in intercultural encounters. The course consists of 8 hours of online lectures divided into 4 weekly meetings. Eligibility for the certificate of attendance depends on regular and active participation.
