From 21 to 23 January 2026, the Observatory of Migration and Human Rights (OMHR) held its Staff Week in Split, Croatia, bringing together representatives from several partner universities of the European University of the Seas (SEA‑EU) Alliance as well as other alliances, including EUNICoast.
The event was a resounding success, fostering rich discussions on the Observatory’s progress, future activities, and shared goals in the field of migration and human rights. Participants included representatives from the University of Cádiz (Spain), Kiel University (Germany), University of Gdansk (Poland), University of Malta (Malta), University of Algarve (Portugal), University of Split (Croatia), NORD University (Norway), as well as the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain) and University of Patras (Greece), both members of the EUNICoast Alliance.
Over the three days, attendees reviewed achievements to date, shared recent advances in migration studies, and identified ongoing challenges that require further collaboration and strategic effort. Key topics included future priorities for research, dissemination strategies beyond academia, and improving engagement with policy‑makers and societal stakeholders.
The Staff Week also provided a valuable platform to share progress in the field of migration and human rights, reinforcing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and international cooperation. Through panels, presentations, and working sessions, participants gained a deeper understanding of both the progress achieved and the obstacles that remain.
Overall, the event highlighted the Observatory’s growing role within the SEA‑EU Alliance and reaffirmed the commitment of partner universities and alliances to work collaboratively on key issues related to migration, human rights, and sustainable development.
