UM’s Good Practice in Inclusive Language Inspires SEA-EU Communication Charter

The University of Malta has played a pivotal role in shaping the SEA-EU Inclusive Communication Charter: How We Communicate in SEA-EU, launched in early 2025. This landmark resource provides recommendations for adopting respectful, inclusive, and non-discriminatory language across both academic and administrative contexts, strengthening a culture of equity and respect across the Alliance.

The Charter was developed within the framework of the SEA-EU Task on Equity and Inclusion, which brings together representatives from across the Alliance. Discussions on the Charter commenced during the working group meetings and was developed during an in-person meeting of the SEA-EU “Inclusion” Working Group, held at the University of Brest (UBO) in October 2024, with substantial contributions from UM. Representing UM, Ms Nadia Abdilla, Equity Coordinator, and Professor JosAnn Cutajar participated online, with Prof Cutajar delivering a detailed presentation on the design and intersectional approach underpinning UM’s Good Practice in Inclusive Language document. Dr Jonathan Borg, Lecturer at the Department for Inclusion and Access to Learning within the Faculty of Education, attended the Brest meeting in person and actively participated in the discussions.

UM’s ‘Good Practice in Inclusive Language’ reference document served as a foundational guide for the Charter, shaping the principles and practices adopted across the Alliance. The resulting SEA-EU guide reflects a shared commitment to embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion at the heart of SEA-EU’s mission. The University of Malta is proud to have provided leadership and expertise in this initiative, reinforcing its role as a driver of inclusive practice and ensuring that the values of fairness, respect, and representation remain central to the SEA-EU vision.
