The SEA-EU alliance commenced its latest Governing Week on November 26, hosted by the University of Malta. This biannual event, previously held in Bodø and scheduled next in Kiel, serves as a pivotal moment for SEA-EU’s core bodies to meet in person and collaboratively steer the alliance’s strategic direction.
The week has drawn nearly 100 delegates from the nine partner universities for a four-day program filled with governance meetings and social events aimed at fostering closer ties and cultural exchange. The first day saw active discussions with the Technical Working Group focusing on the crucial periodic report of the project, and the Quality and Ethics Committee debating enhancements in the quality assurance of joint programs among other key topics. Prof. Alfred Vella, the host Rector, personally welcomed participants, emphasizing the significance of their contributions to SEA-EU’s mission.
After lunch, Marcela Iglesias, the General Coordinator, warmly welcomed all participating co-creation bodies. This introduction set the stage for vibrant discussions on key topics such as sustainable urban development, maritime education enhancements, stakeholder engagement strategies, and increasing student involvement in governance. These dialogues served to emphasize the alliance’s dedication to integrating a diverse array of sectors within its operational framework.
A highlight of the week is the recent submission for accreditation of joint programs, a topic that has generated considerable buzz and is set for in-depth discussion. This step marks a significant milestone in SEA-EU’s commitment to enhancing educational offerings across its network.
Participants later visited the Esplora Centre, engaging with student presentations that showcased the practical impact of SEA-EU’s educational initiatives. The day concluded with a concert that captured the alliance’s essence, as described by Marcela Iglesias: “SEA-EU is about bringing people together through knowledge, innovation, and culture.”
As the Governing Week progresses, the Rectors Meeting and the Executive Committee will address key decisions on the sustainability and future expansion of the alliance. These discussions are crucial for setting the strategic course and integrating innovative practices that will benefit the entire network.
This Governing Week in Malta not only underscores the collaborative spirit of SEA-EU but also sets the stage for future advancements in European higher education.
