The SEA-EU Governing Week, hosted by the University of Malta, wrapped up today, marking the culmination of a series of intensive meetings that are set to shape the future trajectory of the alliance. Held against the historic backdrop of Valletta’s campus, the event drew nearly a hundred academics and administrators from across Europe, showcasing a strong commitment to enhancing higher education within the region.
The day began with an enlightening presentation by Prof. Alfred J. Vella, Rector of the University of Malta, who shared insights into the university’s current projects and achievements. This session set the stage for one of the week’s significant milestones—the confirmation of Marcela Iglesias as the new General Coordinator. Prof. Iglesias, known for her dynamic leadership, provided a compelling status report that highlighted the alliance’s expansive efforts beyond its initial scope. She emphasized advanced educational initiatives like the MEDPORTS course and the vigorous promotion of joint degrees, alongside enriching campus life through projects such as the SEA-EU film series and concerts.
Prof. Iglesias also elaborated on SEA-EU’s growing influence beyond European borders, detailing partnerships in the Americas and Africa, and highlighted cooperative achievements at events like the EAIE in Toulouse and the FOREU4ALL project, illustrating the alliance’s holistic approach to education, research, and cultural exchange.
Focused Committee Discussions and Future Plans
The European Commission’s optimistic update on potential future funding for alliances like SEA-EU post-2027 brought a wave of enthusiasm to the attendees. The governance meeting also included the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting and reviewed the Arctic expedition led by the University of Gdansk, highlighting SEA-EU’s commitment to environmental and marine research.
In a pivotal session, Vice-Rector Levi Gårseth-Nesbakk addressed the newly formed group of vice-rectors, discussing their role as a new governance body. He detailed their structured approach to enhancing the alliance’s operations, focusing on the challenges of aligning diverse educational systems and proposing solutions to foster a cohesive educational environment across member universities.
Lola Perea led a critical discussion on joint degrees, which resulted in the signing of cooperation agreements, marking a key step towards the formalization and successful implementation of these programs. Prof. Vella then recapped the rectors’ meeting, proposing the establishment of a legal entity and an operational office in Brussels to ensure continued support for the alliance, regardless of future European funding scenarios.

The event closed with the handover ceremony from the University of Malta to the University of Kiel, with Ralph Schnider preparing to organize the next Governing Week, scheduled for June 3-5, 2025, in Kiel.
