UM hosted the SEA-EU Theology Staff Week

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta played a key role in the SEA-EU Staff Week, held from 3 to 6 February at the University’s Valletta and Msida campuses. The event brought together scholars from the Catholic Faculty of Theology at the University of Split (Croatia), the University of Cádiz (Spain), and the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Germany) to explore theology’s role in the Mediterranean context.

The opening day focused on theological reflections on Mediterranean societies. Rev. Jean-Claude Attard examined the intersection of theology and anthropology, particularly addressing ethical dilemmas in the region. Prof. John Anthony Berry discussed interreligious coexistence in the Mediterranean, highlighting successful Maltese practices and lessons for Christian theology. The day concluded with a session by Dr. Glen Attard and Rev. Prof. Charló Camilleri, who explored spirituality in post-colonial Malta.

The second day tackled pressing social issues, with Rev. Dr. Mark J. Zammit leading a discussion on migration in Malta, positioning the country as a microcosm of wider Mediterranean migration challenges. Participants then engaged in discussions on theology’s role in addressing poverty, inequality, and migration. Scholars from Croatia, Spain, and Germany contributed diverse perspectives, enriching the dialogue on how theological principles can respond to contemporary Mediterranean challenges.

The final day centered on fostering long-term academic collaboration. Participants exchanged best practices in Mediterranean theology and developed concrete plans for joint research initiatives, academic partnerships, and collaborative theological projects. The Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta reinforced its leadership in theological discourse, emphasising theology’s role in addressing contemporary social and ethical challenges across Europe and the Mediterranean.
