A UM Student-Led Performing Arts Festival: Pause and Play

Final-year Theatre Studies students Angelique Attard, Brendon Thearle, and Monique Falzon launched Pause & Play, a dynamic performing arts festival that ran from 9 to 11 May in the heart of Valletta. This student-led initiative, part of their final-year project, created a space for reflection, connection, and artistic celebration.

Pause & Play was a festival where creativity took centre stage, inviting the audience to explore the magic of the performing arts. Over three immersive days, artists brought their creative ideas to life, while attendees were encouraged to engage, reflect, and play in ways that felt natural to them. From moments of quiet introspection to bursts of uninhibited joy, the festival highlighted how art fosters deeper connections between individuals and their surrounding community.

With a diverse lineup of over 15 events, Pause & Play offered something for everyone, including theatre performances, dance showcases, a drag show, and stand-up comedy. The festival served as a platform for young artists to share their creativity and engage with the audience in a profound way.

“Festivals are an exciting, social way to explore ideas through different artforms. This new festival by UM SPA students and their artistic peers was a great initiative that challenged young local artists to create innovative new work that engaged with the contemporary world; offering entertainment, curiosity, intrigue, and excitement via a variety of artistic forms and events.”
– Alex Weenink (Participating Artist and University Alumni)

“A performing arts festival by and for young artists was vital — it offered a platform for creativity, connection, and growth. It empowered them to share their work, shape the event to their needs, and gain valuable experience, all while building a supportive, authentic community that nurtures the next generation of artists.”
– Rebecca Grech (Participating Choreographer and University Alumni)

The festival unfolded across three venues, with the University of Malta’s Valletta Campus serving as the main hub, hosting performances spread across its ground floor.

Additional events took place at Wild Honey Beer House & Bistro and MaeWest, both within walking distance of the main venue.

Entry to all events was free of charge. Further details were available on the festival’s official website.

Pause & Play was supported by the Department of Theatre Studies within the University of Malta’s School of Performing Arts.
