At the Institute of Agricultural Economics of Kiel University,
Department of Computational Analysis and Modelling in Agricultural Policy, we welcome project proposals on a variety of topics:
• Machine learning applications in agricultural economics
• Remote sensing for rural development
• Energy and agriculture interface (e.g., bioenergy, biogas, bioeconomy, agri-PV, rural energy poverty)
• Trade and Food security
Eligibility and Requirements:
• A strong interest in machine learning and/or remote sensing (prior knowledge is not required).
• Proficiency in R or Python coding.
• A collaborative mindset and the ability to work on joint research projects
About us:
The research group was founded in June 2023 with a Junior Professoriship, and is now growing. As such, visitors can expect close supervision/collaboration and regular contact. We had 2 extremely successful visits in 2025, and 2 are planned in 2026 (through other funding mecanisms).
In research, we investigate how machine learning can be used in Agricultural Economics. In particular, interests lie in agricultural and trade policy issues; analysing food security; and interface between agriculture and energy. This includes the introduction of renewable energy systems in the agricultural sector in Germany and energy poverty in Asia.
To maximize the potential of a visit, we expect:
• Participate in pre-arrival online meetings to refine the research project.
• Complete data collection, cleaning, and preliminary analysis before arrival to maximize productivity during the stay.
• Focus on implementing methodologies and achieving preliminary results during the stay to pave the way for a joint publication
We offer:
• Office space and access to university facilities.
• Support with finding local accommodation (given early confirmation of participation).
. Close supervision and collaboration
• Hands-on training in Machine Learning techniques for agricultural economics.
• Opportunity to participate in the course: Introduction to Machine Learning Applications to Agrifood Systems, and in the working group: Remote Sensing for Rural Development.
. Collaboration on academic writing
We will provide:
Participating in Machine Learning course, weekly seminar, group presentations. I value mentorship and improvement of work processes. Travel costs for the presentation of joint work within EU. Extension of the stay by 1-2 month (allowance to cover accomodation costs).
We expect:
• A strong interest in machine learning and/or
remote sensing (prior knowledge is not required).
• Proficiency in R or Python coding.
• A collaborative mindset and the ability to work on joint research projects.
