University of Algarve dedicates special UALGzine edition to SEA-EU

The University of Algarve has released a special edition of its institutional magazine, UALGzine, entirely dedicated to the European University of the Seas – SEA-EU. Presented on 13 February at the Algarve Science Centre in Faro, an associated partner of the Alliance at the University of Algarve, the event also marked the 6th anniversary of the Alliance, bringing together members of the academic community, media representatives and regional partners.

This edition highlights how UAlg is contributing to SEA-EU by turning knowledge into concrete solutions for coastal regions, with a strong focus on sustainability, blue innovation, academic mobility and engagement with society. In the opening session, Vice-Rector for Partnerships and European University, Patrícia Pinto, reflected on the evolution of SEA-EU and its growing role as a collaborative European space, emphasising the importance of strengthening connections between universities, regions and stakeholders. Tomás Silva, President of the Students’ Union Student and representative in the SEA-EU Student Council, underlined the impact of the Alliance on students’ experience, particularly through mobility opportunities and participation in European initiatives, while Rector Alexandra Teodósio highlighted the strategic importance of SEA-EU for UAlg and its role in reinforcing the university’s European dimension through innovation, education and cooperation.

The presentation of the magazine was led by Mário Antunes, journalist, who reflected on the importance of science communication and the need to translate complex knowledge into clear and accessible language, making science more relevant and useful for society.

UALGzine #18 presents SEA-EU as a living laboratory where universities collaborate to address major challenges faced by coastal regions, including environmental sustainability, blue economy, social cohesion and responsible economic growth. The edition showcases joint research and educational projects, mobility opportunities for students and staff, and initiatives that connect academia with local communities, highlighting how SEA-EU is strengthening UAlg’s European presence across campuses, classrooms and research centres.

The event also featured a series of interactive stations that allowed participants to explore the Alliance in a dynamic and engaging way, including a short pitch introducing SEA-EU and its strategic value, sessions focused on mobility opportunities, community engagement, blue economy and territorial development, as well as sustainability and ocean literacy. The session concluded with a participatory moment inviting attendees to reflect on the Alliance’s impact, followed by a celebration of SEA-EU’s 6th anniversary.
