The University of Malta, through the Institute of Digital Games, hosted the public discussion “Games at the Crossroads” at the Aula Magna, Valletta Campus on 30 June 2025.
The event brought together international academics, designers, and researchers to explore the role of games in a time shaped by global challenges such as climate change, conflict, and social crisis. Open to both conference participants and the public, the discussion formed part of the DiGRA 2025 conference programme.
A multidisciplinary panel featured contributions from leading figures in game studies, design, and interactive media, followed by a public Q&A session. Speakers included Rasheed Abueideh, Prof. Aphra Kerr, Dr Cameron Kunzelman, Dr Omar N’Shea, Dr Hannah Nicklin, and Yuqian Sun (CheeseTalk).
The session was moderated by Dr Daniel Vella and Prof. Krista Bonello Rutter Giappone, with support from Xjenza Malta and the Institute of Digital Games.
The event highlighted the University of Malta’s role in fostering international dialogue on games as cultural and creative practice.
