Parthenope student Alessandro Pezza defended a thesis about the SEA-EU BaltArctic Cruise

On the 4th of April Parthenope student Alessandro Pezza obtained his bachelor’s degree in Nautical, Aeronautical and Meteo-Oceanographic Sciences defending a thesis about the SEA-EU Oceanographic Campaign “BlatActic Cruise”. The expedition involved all SEA-EU coastal partner universities onboard the r/v Oceanograf. Scientists boarded the Research Vessel Oceanograf to support core research works and carry out their own scientific projects.

In particular, the scope of research involved tracing water masses flowing from the Baltic Sea to the Arctic Ocean and tracking chemical substances (e.g. microplastics, heavy metals) and living organisms present in them.
The cruise and derived studies provided answers about the extent of Baltic-derived brackish-water organisms distribution in the Nordic Seas, as well as the information on the nature of the northward outflow of Baltic waters and how far north they are still detectable.

The Parthenope student’s thesis was entitled “Baltartic cruise: Lagrangian data analysis”, and he obtained top marks and honours. The thesis supervisors were Prof. Enrico Zambianchi, Prof. Yuri Cotroneo and Dr. Elena Calvo.
