Education, Inclusion, and Equality: Reflections from the Latest Observatory of Migration and Human Rights Online Seminar

On Monday, March 16, the last online seminar organized by the Observatory of Migration and Human Rights took place, as part of its ongoing programme dedicated to examining issues related to migration and human rights.

The session was presented by Associate Professor Alyssa Marie Kvalvaag, who focused her presentation on the relationship between migrant integration and gender equality in Norway. The seminar explored the interactions between these two domains, highlighting potential tensions that may arise between integration policies and equality discourses in diverse social contexts.

Particular attention was given to the inequalities that persist in integration processes, emphasizing the crucial role of education in ensuring that migrants are informed about their rights, opportunities, and pathways for inclusion in host societies.

The discussion also highlighted a significant gap between legal frameworks and social realities, demonstrating that although normative structures promote equality and inclusion, their practical implementation continues to face cultural, social, and structural barriers.

The seminar fostered a rich academic debate, involving several universities within the SEA-EU alliance, including the University of Split and Kiel University. This exchange allowed participants to compare perspectives and experiences across different European contexts, consolidating the seminar as a valuable platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and academic collaboration.

Overall, the session not only deepened understanding of current challenges in migration and gender equality but also reinforced the Observatory’s role as a hub for knowledge exchange and cooperation among European academic institutions.
