To mark International Women’s Day 2026, the Department of Gender and Sexualities, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Valletta, hosted a special screening of the award-winning film Elaha (German with English subtitles) on Friday, 6 March 2026 at the Arts Lecture Theatre (ALT), University of Malta.
The event brought together members of the University community to reflect on themes of gender, cultural expectations, sexuality, and self-determination through the screening of Elaha, a compelling 110-minute film.
The evening opened with welcome remarks by Dr Sandra Scicluna, Dean of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing, followed by an opening address by Her Excellency Ambassador Beyer. Prof. JosAnn Cutajar, Head of the Department of Gender and Sexualities, then introduced the film, providing context for the discussions and reflections that followed.
The event formed part of the University’s activities marking International Women’s Day and highlighted the importance of dialogue on gender equality, inclusion, and social awareness through cinema.
