SEA-EU brings together international experts in Algeciras to advance maritime decarbonization and green corridors

The European University of the Seas joined forces with the University of Cádiz, MEDPorts and the Algeciras Bay Port Authority to deliver an international training programme connecting academic knowledge with real-world challenges in sustainable maritime transport.

From 27 to 29 October 2026, Algeciras hosted the second edition of the MEDPorts Training Course on Decarbonization & Green Corridors. The event brought together international experts, port professionals, institutional representatives, academics and companies to explore solutions for a more sustainable maritime sector. The SEA-EU Alliance, the University of Cádiz (UCA), the MEDPorts Association and the Algeciras Bay Port Authority (APBA) joined forces to organise this international training initiative. Through this collaboration, the partners highlighted the importance of connecting universities and the maritime-port industry to address the challenges of the energy transition.

Throughout the three-day programme, participants gained valuable insights from international specialists and industry representatives. In particular, experts from organisations such as the European Commission, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the World Bank and UNCTAD shared their perspectives alongside representatives of leading maritime and energy companies. Moreover, the programme covered key topics such as international and European decarbonization policies, alternative maritime fuels, hydrogen technologies, sustainable port operations and the development of green shipping corridors.

In addition to the theoretical sessions, participants visited port facilities in Algeciras. These technical visits offered first-hand insights into operational challenges and opportunities. As a result, attendees gained a deeper understanding of the practical steps needed to advance greener maritime transport.

Connecting education with the blue economy

For SEA-EU, this initiative demonstrates how European university alliances can address challenges beyond academia. By connecting education, industry and public institutions, the Alliance helps develop practical solutions to shared challenges. Furthermore, the University of Cádiz included the course in its micro-credential training offer, awarding 1.5 ECTS credits. To make this opportunity more accessible, the organisers also offered eleven full tuition scholarships, including opportunities for students from SEA-EU partner universities.

Throughout the programme, participants exchanged knowledge, explored international policy perspectives and examined real industry case studies. As a result, the initiative strengthened cooperation between universities and maritime stakeholders while encouraging the exchange of practical expertise. In addition, this collaboration reflects SEA-EU’s commitment to developing essential skills for the future of the blue economy. At the same time, it promotes lifelong learning and supports the sustainable transformation of Europe’s coastal and maritime territories.

Initiatives such as the MEDPorts Training Course help SEA-EU build stronger connections between higher education and the maritime sector. Through these partnerships, the Alliance continues to turn knowledge and innovation into practical responses to shared environmental and economic challenges.
