Members of the Observatory Participate in the Morocco vs. Ceuta: Mass Immigration and Autocracy vs. the Democratic Values of Spain and the EU Conference

The conference will bring together experts from a range of academic fields to address issues concerning the situation in Ceuta, relations between Spain and Morocco, and the broader European Union framework.

The conference will take place at the UNED headquarters in Ceuta on Thursday, 15 October, and at the Conference Hall of the Algeciras Technological Campus Foundation at the University of Cádiz (UCA) on Friday, 16 October.

The conference is organised and directed by Dr Inmaculada González García, Full Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Cádiz, and Dr Ángeles Jiménez García-Carriazo, Ramón y Cajal Researcher in the area of Public International Law and International Relations at UCA. Both are members of the Observatory of Migration and Human Rights and will play a prominent role in the programme.

Other members of the Observatory participating in the event include Dr Alejandro del Valle Gálvez, Full Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at UCA; Dr Miguel Ángel Acosta Sánchez, Full Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at UCA; Dr Lorena Calvo Mariscal, Assistant Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at UCA; Enrique del Álamo Marchena, Lecturer in Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Cádiz and María de los Ángeles Bellido Lora, Lecturer in Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Cádiz.

The first day will begin with the opening conference “Ceuta: What Now? The Future of Spain-Morocco Relations after the Ceuta Crisis”, delivered by journalist Ignacio Cembrero and presented by Dr Alejandro del Valle Gálvez.

This will be followed by the round table entitled “Ceuta: State Crisis – The Spain-Morocco Framework and the European Union-Morocco Relationship”, featuring, alongside other specialists, Alejandro del Valle Gálvez, Miguel A. Acosta Sánchez and Inmaculada González García.

The programme also includes a round table devoted to “Ceuta, Coexistence and Mass Migration”, in which Dr Lorena Calvo Mariscal will participate alongside representatives from academia and various civil society organisations.

The second day, to be held on 16 October in Algeciras, will include the round table entitled “The Mass Arrival of Migrants in Italy, Malta and Spain”, with the participation of Dr Ángeles Jiménez García-Carriazo, Enrique del Álamo Marchena and María de los Ángeles Bellido Lora.

The participation of these researchers highlights the Observatory’s involvement in an academic forum of particular relevance to the study of Ceuta and relations between Spain, Morocco and the European Union.

Morocco vs. Ceuta: Mass Immigration and Autocracy vs. the Democratic Values of Spain and the EU Conference provides a forum for researchers and specialists from different disciplines to exchange knowledge and perspectives and to engage in academic analysis of issues related to migration, coexistence, international relations and the situation in Ceuta.

The participation of the Observatory’s members further strengthens its presence in academic research and debate on issues of particular significance to Ceuta and the southern border of the European Union.
