The 2nd International Congress for Sustainable Ecosystems in the Mediterranean Area (STEcoMed 2026) was officially opened on 22 October at MedILS in Split. Organized by the Faculty of Marine Studies of the University of Split, the two-day event brought together scientists, researchers, and experts from Croatia and abroad to exchange knowledge and strengthen cooperation in the field of Mediterranean ecosystem conservation and sustainable management.
Opening the congress, representatives of the University of Split, local authorities, and environmental institutions emphasized the importance of scientific collaboration, innovation, and support for young researchers in addressing the environmental challenges facing the Mediterranean region.
At a time of increasing environmental challenges, climate change, and growing pressure on natural resources, STEcoMed 2026 provided an important platform for dialogue between academia, experts, and public institutions. The event also highlighted the importance of science-based approaches to safeguarding the Mediterranean environment. With its strong maritime identity and rich natural and cultural heritage, Split offered an ideal setting for hosting such a gathering.
A special feature of this year’s congress was a dedicated project session showcasing research initiatives, activities, and achievements, with the aim of fostering new partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The congress also featured the presentation of the SEA-EU European University Alliance, introduced by Vice-Rector for International Cooperation and Projects, Prof. Katarina Vukojević. She highlighted SEA-EU’s role in promoting international cooperation, mobility opportunities, and joint education and research activities among partner universities.
By bringing together experts from different fields and sectors, STEcoMed 2026 reaffirmed the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in developing sustainable solutions for the future of the Mediterranean.
