From April 10th to April 12th, the European Student Assembly 2024 brought together a dynamic group of young leaders to discuss and devise solutions for some of Europe’s most pressing challenges. Among these leaders were Vladimir Ercegović and Max Hartel, student representatives from the European University of the Seas SEA-EU.
Deliberating on Euroscepticism
Vladimir played a crucial role in Panel 11, which focused on “Euroscepticism” and explored the economic variables influencing public opinion towards the European Union. He explained, “Our discussions were deeply insightful, incorporating a broad spectrum of viewpoints from across the EU. We tackled economic issues like income inequality and employment instability, which frequently feed euroscepticism. Following extensive meetings and proposal drafting, we were immensely satisfied when several of our policy proposals were selected to be forwarded to the European Parliament for consideration.”
Expanding Discussions Beyond Economics
Moreover, Vladimir actively participated in panels covering topics beyond his primary focus. He shared, “One session on Artificial Intelligence (AI) sparked intense debates about the regulation of emerging technologies. It underscored the necessity for a balanced approach that fosters innovation while maintaining ethical standards and personal privacy.”
With his background in medicine, Vladimir also brought valuable insights to the panel titled “The Cure for the Future.” He contributed to discussions on using AI to streamline healthcare processes, such as reducing wait times in medical facilities and improving emergency department triage. Additionally, the panel addressed public health measures for the early detection of viral genes in animal populations to avert future pandemics.
Fostering Connections and Future Visions
Vladimir highlighted the broader significance of the assembly, stating, “It wasn’t solely about the formal discussions and proposals; it was about forging connections with like-minded individuals committed to shaping a better future for Europe. The energy and collaborative spirit were truly palpable.”
Reflecting on the experience, Vladimir expressed his appreciation for the University of Split, which allowed him the honor of representing SEA-EU. “This experience has not only broadened my perspective but also connected me with a network of individuals who are as passionate as I am. I’m eager to advance the initiatives we’ve started, confident that our collective efforts will contribute significantly to a better Europe.”
