SEA-EU Art Staff Week 2024: Celebrating Art and Cultural Heritage in Split

The University of Split successfully hosted the SEA-EU Art Staff Week from November 5th to 7th, 2024, offering a vibrant three-day program that brought together participants from partner universities, gallerists, curators, historians, and art enthusiasts. This dynamic event, organized by the Split Arts Academy and the University Gallery, featured a compelling blend of cultural activities, networking, and artistic exchange. Through workshops, exhibitions, and lectures, the event celebrated European art and culture, with a special focus on the Hallstatt culture and Croatia’s rich cultural heritage. Participants engaged in hands-on artistic experiences, gaining deeper insights into the influences shaping European art while enjoying a collaborative celebration of creativity and heritage.

A Warm Welcome and Campus Exploration

The event kicked off with registration and a welcome speech by Rector Dragan Ljutić at the University Senate Hall. Gordana Dujmović, the Technical Manager of the SEA-EU office in Split, also greeted the guests warmly. Representatives from partner universities introduced themselves, setting a friendly and collaborative tone for the week ahead. Following the introductions, participants were transported to the Split Arts Academy, located in the historic Gripe Fortress. The guided tour offered a glimpse into the academy’s vibrant creative environment, showcasing its distinctive facilities and artistic projects. As a special highlight, students from the Arts Academy performed a captivating guitar duet and a dynamic wind sextet, delighting the audience with their talent. A networking lunch provided an opportunity for participants to connect informally, fostering new friendships and professional exchanges. The cultural program continued with a visit to the Meštrović Gallery, where guests explored a selection of the renowned sculptor’s most significant works, reflecting Croatia’s artistic heritage. The day concluded with dinner at Luxor restaurant, where guests enjoyed traditional cuisine in a warm and lively atmosphere, wrapping up an inspiring first day.

Artistic Discoveries and Shared Knowledge

The second day began with a guided tour of the University Library, featuring its Special Collection of works by Marko Marulić. Participants were captivated by the rich archival materials and the ongoing efforts to preserve and digitize these invaluable pieces of Croatian literary heritage. Following the library tour, guests gathered for the opening of the exhibition “Brothers in Arms” at the University Gallery. The exhibition showcased historical artifacts and was complemented by interactive Hallstatt workshops, where attendees had the unique opportunity to try traditional crafts, including weaving and cooking. This hands-on experience, combined with a networking lunch, created a sense of community and promoted shared learning. The afternoon session included a lecture by guest speakers Hrvoje Potrebica and Borut Križ, who offered deeper insights into the historical context of the exhibition. Their engaging presentations highlighted the intricate connections between history, art, and cultural heritage, enriching the participants’ understanding and appreciation of the topics covered.

Celebrating Film and Closing Ceremony

The final day of the Art Staff Week began with the opening of the SEA-EU Film Festival at the University Gallery. The film screenings showcased a diverse selection of works from filmmakers across the SEA-EU alliance, including thought-provoking pieces like Metal-Girl by Paweł Golonko and The Sound by Monica Guerreiro. Each film offered unique perspectives, sparking discussions and reflections among the audience. The event concluded with a heartfelt closing ceremony, where participants shared their experiences and expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to collaborate and learn from one another.

Fostering Collaboration Across SEA-EU

The SEA-EU Art Staff Week 2024 was a resounding success, blending academic exploration, cultural immersion, and artistic expression. Hosted by the University of Split, the event provided an inspiring platform for dialogue, creativity, and the forging of new connections, reinforcing the SEA-EU alliance’s commitment to collaboration. Aligned with Work Package 4 (WP4) of the SEA-EU project, which emphasizes the importance of cultural and artistic exchange, the event was a meaningful step forward.
