How can coastal communities respond to erosion, flooding and unstable cliffs? Students explored these challenges during the “Coastal Protection and Sustainability” Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) in Naples. The Parthenope University organised the course with the University of Split and the University of Gdańsk as part of the SEA-EU Alliance.
The programme began with online lectures from 14 to 17 September 2026. Then, from 21 to 25 September, participants met at Parthenope’s Department of Engineering for lectures, workshops and group work. They studied coastal erosion, sediment transport and flood modelling. They also considered how climate change and human activity affect coastal areas.
Field visits gave students a chance to examine these issues on site. At the Fondi coastal plain, they explored ways to reduce natural hazards near river mouths. Around the island of Capri, a boat trip helped them study rocky-cliff instability and coastal erosion. Finally, the students presented their group work and discussed what they had learned.
Professors Stefano Aversa and Guido Benassai, together with Dr Giada Varra and Dr Alessia Campiche, coordinated the BIP. The Parthenope SEA-EU Office provided organisational support.
