SEA-EU Film Festival 2024: We have a winner!

The University of Split, a proud member of the SEA-EU Alliance, issued a call in July 2024 for film submissions for the SEA-EU Film Festival. This initiative offered students a unique opportunity to submit short films ranging from 3 to 15 minutes. The main goal of the event is to foster the creative expression of young filmmakers and provide a platform for emerging talents to showcase their work to an international audience. An esteemed jury, composed of experts from all SEA-EU partner universities, evaluated the submissions based on both artistic and technical quality.

Out of 30 entries, 11 outstanding films were selected for screening at the University Gallery in Split during Art Staff Week, which will take place from November 5 to 7, 2024. The remaining films will be available for viewing on small screen starting November 7, 2024.

The winner was announced on the official SEA-EU Instagram profile:https://www.instagram.com/p/DBGg_ffzul0/?igsh=MTYwZmcydHFzaWl1cw%3D%3D

The Creative Process Behind the Paweł Golonko’s Latest Film

Paweł Golonko’s latest film captures the intense, raw emotions of adolescence, a time when everything feels new, awkward, exciting, and overwhelming. Inspired by this whirlwind of feelings, he built the story around a vivid image of the final scene, exploring the awkwardness and challenges of being a teen. At its core, the film encourages self-acceptance, urging viewers to embrace their individuality instead of seeking validation from others.
Filming presented challenges, particularly with a limited budget. The team had to get creative to bring the protagonist’s superpower to life, relying on collaboration, especially with VFX artist Staszek Juszczyk. Their ingenuity allowed them to create convincing effects despite financial constraints.
The film’s vibrant, colorful style reflects the positive aspects of being different. The cinematography uses both stillness and dynamic camera movement, with the final scene symbolizing the protagonist’s freedom. This finale, the most complex scene to film, holds special significance for the director, enriched by a score composed specifically for the moment. Now, the director is searching for inspiration for his next short film, excited for future creative endeavors.

Conclusion and Reflection

As the festival concluded, the SEA-EU community celebrated the importance of artistic expression in film, encapsulated by the quote: “The best cinema speaks to you personally, reveals a part of yourself you didn’t know existed.” This sentiment resonates deeply as the festival not only highlighted Golonko’s achievement but also underscored the collective creativity of all participants. While this year’s festival may be coming to an end, the impact of sharing these stories and voices will linger on, inspiring new generations of filmmakers to tell their unique tales.
