From 22 to 26 June, the University of Algarve (UAlg) hosted the on-site component of the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) “Europe in Dialogue: Identity, Heritage and Innovation in Coastal Cities”, organised within the framework of the SEA-EU Alliance.
Coordinated by the University of Algarve, the programme brought together 22 students from the eight SEA-EU partner universities, supported by academic staff and student volunteers. The initiative further strengthened the international and collaborative spirit of the alliance, creating a dynamic environment for intercultural exchange and shared learning.
With an interdisciplinary approach, the programme explored key themes such as identity, cultural heritage, sustainability, innovation and resilience, encouraging participants to reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing Europe’s coastal regions.
Following a virtual component held in May, the on-site week combined academic sessions, practical activities, field visits and collaborative discussions, offering participants an immersive learning experience in an international setting.
Throughout the week, students engaged with topics including the history and identity of coastal cities, tangible and intangible cultural heritage, environmental and urban resilience, coastal gastronomy, and future challenges linked to sustainability and innovation.
The practical component included visits to emblematic sites in the Algarve region, such as Faro’s historic centre, Ria Formosa Natural Park and Faro Municipal Market, allowing participants to connect theoretical discussions with the cultural, social and environmental realities of coastal territories.
More than an academic programme, this BIP served as a platform for intercultural dialogue, collaboration and critical reflection on the future of coastal Europe. It also highlighted UAlg’s and SEA-EU’s commitment to fostering innovative, inclusive and internationally connected education, aligned with the major challenges of sustainability and ecological transition.
