Transversal competences for Doctoral Students

The SEA-EU Alliance offers doctoral courses, promoting reciprocity among partner universities. These include both existing and newly created courses for PhD candidates, initially focusing on marine sciences with plans to expand. The Alliance ensures easy access to course information and enrolment for doctoral candidates through a regularly updated online platform, inviting applications from members across the Alliance.

Conditions of enrolment:

  • The course offers are meant for SEA-EU Alliance Universities’ doctoral candidates: Registration is only considered if made with a valid institutional email address.
  • By applying to any of the courses you agree that your data (name, affiliation, email) will be passed on to the course instructor and the corresponding universities’ entity in case your application is confirmed.
  • A certificate of participation will be issued, upon attendance to >75% of the course.
  • Registration is binding.

Course Content:

The course ‘Polska po polsku’ is an invitation to Gdańsk – the city of freedom. Students will learn what Gdańsk is famous for, where Lech Wałęsa – the legendary leader of the Solidarity movement, President of the Republic of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize winner – lived, and will follow in his footsteps. During the classes, we will count how many goals Robert Lewandowski has scored and how many matches Iga Świątek has won. The tutor will also talk about the specialities of Polish cuisine.

During the classes, students will learn how to introduce themselves, talk about what they do and what their interests and hobbies are. They will also learn how to plan a trip, how to get to Gdańsk from, for example Cadiz or Split. They will be able to place an order in a Polish café or restaurant and express their preferences in terms of flavours and dishes. Each class will include elements of Polish culture.

The Interdepartmental Research Centre for Foreign Languages and Literatures (CRILLS) of Parthenope University offers a short-term advanced training course in English for Professional Communication. This intensive course is designed for students aiming at learning how to communicate properly in the workplace, providing them with transversal written and oral communication skills in professional English. Specifically, the course is structured around all four language skills referring to the B2 level of the CEFR. After a general introduction to English for Professional Purposes (EPP), students will be provided with a comprehensive overview of the main written and oral genres of professional communication in English, including the CV, the business report, and the job interview. Students will also be taught some learning strategies to improve their vocabulary acquisition as well as their reading comprehension skills. The course consists of 10 online lectures. At the end of the course an online test will take place. Maritime and Environmental Law: theory and practice

The main objective of this one day module is to teach about the ship pollution and the socio-legal approach to marine plastic pollution (lecture part in the morning) as well as to practise the participatory principle in Environmental Law at European level in an in-depth exercise part (in the afternoon).   • Online academic text production and presentation skills: text and presentation structures, rhetorical strategies, ethical concerns (e.g. dis- and misinformation)

  • Argumentation: fundamentals of argumentation, logic and argumentation, providing constructive feedback, self reflection

Global Citizenship SEA-EU Micro-credential

This mostly asynchronous online seminar of about 20 to 25 hours of learning is designed to encourage and inspire you as a student to take a close look at the concept of Global Citizenship and to develop an understanding of Global Citizenship on an individual level. Within this supervised online course with 10% of synchronous online teaching and 90% of asynchronous self-paced learning on an online platform with open weekly coaching (on demand), you will have the opportunity to explore approaches to globalization and citizenship and engage with the Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, you’ll examine the concept of Cultural Intelligence and reflect on how to act in a culturally diverse context.

Global Ocean Governance Framework and Managing our Relations with the Ocean

The main objective of the module is to be able to identify current ocean governance scenarios and their global and regional challenges, as well as to critically describe overarching ocean governance issues, including the maritime areas of jurisdiction and control. Additionally, the main EU Directives concerning marine environmental protection will be taught.

Seafloor Mapping School 

The GEOMAR-iMAGE CREATE Seafloor Mapping School provides training in remote predictive geological mapping techniques with a focus on seafloor geology and GIS application. Application closed.

The GEOMAR-iMAGE CREATE Seafloor Mapping School provides intensive introductory training in seafloor geology and remote predictive geological mapping techniques. Students are introduced to data compilation and integration, accessing data repositories, how to process different data sets such as multibeam bathymetry and geophysical data, how to set up map projects in a GIS with the relevant data management tools and editors, and how to interpret the compiled data in terms of the geological attributes of the seafloor. Students learn how to construct a geological map legend, create relevant map layers, including regional time-stratigraphic models, and undertake geodynamic reconstructions of large areas of the oceans.
The first four days of the Mapping School are an introduction to marine geology and seabed mapping. The remaining 5-6 days consist of practical exercises, lectures, and discussions.

Application Deadline: 14 July 2024

Course Type: On-line lectures and practical exercises with GIS. Independent work on the mapping project and report writing is expected.

Participation: 10 days x 6-8 hrs/day.
